The Autumnal Equinox is one of them. Day and night arrive at near equality; light and darkness face one another in solemn balance. Yet this equilibrium is only momentary. After the threshold is crossed, the nights lengthen, the visible powers of nature withdraw, and the world begins its descent into the inward season. To astronomy, the equinox is the moment when the Sun crosses the celestial equator southward. In the Northern Hemisphere, it occurs in September and marks the beginning of astronomical autumn; in the Southern Hemisphere, the same event announces spring. To the esoteric mind, however, it is more than a celestial measurement. It is a symbol of harvest, judgment, gratitude, renunciation, and preparation for spiritual interiority.
