First, they serve a practical purpose: they regulate the size of a body, preserve intimacy, and protect the quality of participation. Second, they invite symbolic reflection. A membership limit may therefore be both an administrative rule and a number through which members contemplate order, proportion, and spiritual completeness. Two notable examples are 45 , associated in some jurisdictions with a Conclave of the Masonic and Military Order of the Red Cross of Constantine, and 72 , the membership limit of a College of the Societas Rosicruciana in Civitatibus Foederatis (SRICF).
